Obama’s $130 Billion War Budget Based on ‘Best Estimates’

Now President Obama will have to face the same challenges President Bush did. This time instead of being from the other side of the isle lets see how loud the Democrats complain as well as how tough the “standards for progress” are.

WASHINGTON — President Obama’s proposed defense budget includes $130 billion for the nation’s two wars, a figure that may not be enough.

And his Democratic allies in Congress are threatening to set conditions that must be met before that money is handed out.

Obama sent to Congress on Thursday details of his proposed $664 billion Pentagon spending plan for the budget year starting in October. It includes $534 billion for base defense programs and $130 billion for overseas operations, including the wars he’s ramping down in Iraq and ramping up in Afghanistan.

The budget aims to cover what the Defense Department needs “to fight the wars we are in today and the scenarios we are most likely to face in the years ahead, while at the same time providing a hedge against other risks and contingencies,” Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a statement released in Washington as he traveled in Afghanistan.

The $130 billion for overseas missions included $65 billion for Afghanistan and $61 billion for Iraq — the first time spending for the seven-year-old Afghan campaign has surpassed the one in Iraq.

“This request is where you’re going to first see the swing of not only dollars or resources but … capability from the Iraqi theater into the Afghanistan theater,” Navy Vice Adm. Steve Stanley, director of force structure for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Pentagon news conference.

A Pentagon summary of the budget request said the war spending proposal “is intended to fund all currently known requirements for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan for the entire fiscal year.”

An Average Day in a Free Country

This is funny in a way, just one mans daily dealing with Government

I am fairly vocal amongst my friends (and a few strangers) regarding my bias towards limited government. The typical response I get is something along the lines of, “Are you crazy, America is the freest country in the world!” I think the secondhand dealers in information (public school teachers and the sensationalist media amongst others) have done a great job of indoctrinating the general population into believing that we are truly free. They really don’t notice the subtle effects of a new law here and a new regulation there. It’s kind of like the curse of income tax withholding where by stealing our hard-earned money a little bit at a time (each paycheck) we don’t notice that we are being robbed. I feel that our freedom is being stolen a little bit at a time. To help drive home the point, I’ll use an average day in my life as an example.

My alarm goes off each morning somewhere between 6 and 7 am. I am not a big fan of the buzzer so I typically set my alarm to “radio” mode. I haven’t paid up for satellite radio, so I still wake up to “Free FM.” Well, I am awake for a whole 10 seconds and here is my first interaction with Big Brother. The beast known as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has a complete stranglehold on what we hear over the radio waves. As is the case with the majority of government regulation, we supposedly need the FCC to “protect” the people. In this particular case, we are being protected from offensive material on the airwaves. Of course, “offensive” is defined by whoever happens to be calling the shots at the FCC at the time.

Hot Spots or the coming War

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

I know no one really wants to talk about these issues, however not to would be insane.
Lets take a look at Asia first; we have North Korea and China both acting up at the same time. We have around 30,000 troops in South Korea, which we have a treaty to defend if South Korea is attacked. We also have a treaty with Taiwan if they are attacked. Now today as I write this, we (USA) is already spread pretty thin with out armed forces. So if China was to back North Korea’s attack on South Korea, and China then attacked Taiwan, we would be hard pressed to defend both, or to be brutally honest to defend just one. Granted we are not the only Nation that would back both Countries, however as normal the USA would be expected to have the most troops and Marines on the ground. Where would we get these men and women? Of course we would have to have a draft again, and this would not sit well with a lot of people in our country. However we would be left with no choice. Since we can never again allow naked aggression go unpunished, like Europe tried to do with Hitler. So lets look at the facts if this were to happen. First South Korea would be rolled over in about 30 days, while Taiwan would be able to push China back off the island for awhile, they too would be over run without our support. I know your thinking what about the 30,000 US Armed Forces member in South Korea now? Well to be honest when it’s 3,000,000 vs 30,000+S.Korea’s military, which last time I checked was around 560,000 odd troops. Now in South Korea’s favor is the fact that all able bodied men having to complete 24 months on active duty. So they would have a good militia to call up. However if North Korea could roll up South Korea in 30 days or less, it would be a mute point. Granted these people could perform guerrilla actions and tie up enough of North Korea’s troops for us and the coalition to be able to at the very least establish a strong hold on South Korean soil.

Taiwan would be a very tough nut to crack right away, and I do believe that we with our allies could respond fast enough to prevent Taiwan from being over run by sheer numbers.

While, I tend to believe that China has more to lose then it would gain by these actions, I am not sure that everyone would agree.

Just Food for thought, with more to follow.

Threat Assessment

Friday, February 20th, 2009

The unofficial Threat Assessment was leaked today as it always is before it’s sent to Congress. While the assessment is a bit worrisome, I have faith in our Military to build itself back up. What I do not have faith in, is Congress approving the money that the Military will need.

The instability around the world is only going to get worse as the economy around the world gets worse. No secret that those who wish to do harm to their Country or take power in their Country will attempt to do so, and gather support by telling people of those country’s that it’s the person or people in power, fault that the common people are suffering.

Add those areas to the already strained areas that we are not engaged in combat right now, and it leads me to believe that we need to invest some serious money into our Military. Let’s just look at N.Korea alone, first we have a treaty in place to help protect S.Korea, second N.Korea will not give up on it nuclear plans, third they are once again rattling their sabers. With a 3 million man army they must be taken seriously. Not to mention we would not know until right before it happens if China would back N.Korea’s play to invade S.Korea. Nor do we know how Japan will feel if N.Korea goes ahead with the testing of a missile that not only can reach Japan but also the States. Our current forces in S.Korea are just as inadequate as the Forces were when N.Korea kicked off their invasion on October 1,1950. Now I am not down playing nor bad mouth our Military that’s stationed there. My point is when the balloon goes up over there, they will be just like our Military in 1950 at the very start over the war. Running for their lives. Sorry 3 million men coming over the border. At current the S.Korean army is roughly a half a million men and women. Compared with 3 million that N.Korea has.  This is only one area that could be a hot spot. I have no doubt that unless we appease N.Korea, we will be at war with them by 2012. I hope I am wrong, God knows I have been before. However just how far are we willing to go with appeasing N.Korea. Would America be able to stand the sacrifice that would be necessary to help defend one of our Allies? In WW2 just taking Iwo Jima we lost 6,825 Marines and Sailors. Not to mention the 27,909 that were wounded. The battle only lasted 25 days. Do you think that the American People would be able to accept these types of losses today?
Plus we have Pakistan which has given the Islamic Radicals in the Norhern Province’s control over those areas. In order to prevent nuclear weapons from falling into hand of a Radical Islam Governement we will have to go in and prop up their current President. This will not please the American people, however they will accept it since over half think we should have been in Afgan and Pakistan instead of Iraq.

Only going to mention a few other areas, Russia, Georgia, and Venezuela. All three are potential hot spots that may need Military intervention.

Our Public leaders should never forget the phrase, “if you want peace prepare for war.”
