If people would apply a little bit of common sense then we would not have these idiotic charges. Long story short, young kid riding his new bike turns corner and there are 3 pit bulls without there owners. The dogs attack the kid, a neighbor sees this runs inside grabs his gun and kills one of the dogs. A police officer heard the shot and responded he killed the other two dogs.
Now the neighbor is under investigation for possibly breaking the law for discharging his firearm beyond his property line. Full story here
